Un comienzo perfecto para una ola perfecta.
A las 8 de la mañana en punto se dio comienzo a la competencia del Arica Chilean Challenge con la participación de diversos chilenos como Joaquín Viveros, Omar Ríos y Diego Berrios, entre otros. El frio y el buen oleaje eran los compañeros perfectos para disfrutar un show, que tuvo alrededor de 400 espectadores en la ex isla El Alacrán.
A las 8 de la mañana en punto se dio comienzo a la competencia del Arica Chilean Challenge con la participación de diversos chilenos como Joaquín Viveros, Omar Ríos y Diego Berrios, entre otros. El frio y el buen oleaje eran los compañeros perfectos para disfrutar un show, que tuvo alrededor de 400 espectadores en la ex isla El Alacrán.
En la jornada se corrió el primer round completo, el cual dejó como vencedores de esta primera etapa a los chilenos Diego Berrios, Joaquín Viveros, Francisco Alvarado, Matías Muniz, Cristian Calfule, Pedro Sagardia, Matías Sepúlveda, Felipe Concha, Roberto Miranda, Mauro Vivanco y a los internacionales Giovani Pinto (Ven), Bruno Rocha (Bra),Ben Mackinnon (Nzl), Waldo de Vleesch (ZAF) Y Santiago Sánchez (ARG).
Luego de la primera ronda y después de un descanso de unos 10 minutos se continuó con la segunda ronda hasta que el viento azotó el borde costero y la calidad del oleaje disminuyó de manera tal que no se pudo continuar con la competencia.
Los resultados parciales de la segunda ronda dieron como vencedores a Sergio Luis (Bra), Raúl Nogueira (Bra), Francisco Alvarado (Chi), Matías Muniz, Alexandre Widtman (Chi) y Bruno Rocha (Bra).
El evento contó con variada prensa y con la ilustre visita del alcalde Waldo Sankán quién disfrutó del espectáculo desde la estructura y compartió con los jueces del certamen y se mostró conforme con esta competencia.
La primera jornada del ACC terminó alrededor del medio día y tuvo una muy buena calificación por parte del público, competidores y organización. Chico Garritano, representante de la IBA en el torneo, entregó sus primeras impresiones sobre la competencia y los ariqueños que están participando al plantear que el primer día “fue muy bueno, un muy buen comienzo de campeonato, los ariqueños mostraron un muy buen nivel y recalca que la jornada entregó los resultados esperados. La ola por su parte tuvo una muy buena altura y que el nivel estuvo muy bueno también. Consultado por el tema del viento y la hora de término de la primera jornada, Garritano se refirió sobre el Gringo como “Una ola muy peculiar, debido a que trabaja con marea y viento, por lo que cuando el viento aparece las olas disminuyen.
El cuarto día de campeonato y el primero de competencia dejó a todos muy conformes, muchos aplausos se escucharon con las maniobras de los riders y también un muy fuerte apoyo a los locales en la competencia.

At 08:00am local time the first rounds of the Arica Chilean Challenge Started, the locals showed their skills. A cold morning welcomed the start of the competition with a decent crowd of 400 people.
On the first round the winners were the chileans Diego Berrios, Joaquín Viveros, Francisco Alvarado, Matías Muniz, Cristian Calfule, Pedro Sagardia, Matías Sepúlveda, Felipe Concha, Roberto Miranda, Mauro Vivanco and the internationals Giovani Pinto (Ven), Bruno Rocha (Bra),Ben Mackinnon (Nzl), Waldo de Vleesch (ZAF) and Santiago Sánchez (ARG).
After a short break we started the second round, results so far leave the following winners: Sergio Luis (Bra), Raúl Nogueira (Bra), Francisco Alvarado (Chi), Matías Muniz, Alexandre Widtman (Chi) and Bruno Rocha (Bra).
With the presence of local authorities the day finished at 12:00pm local time, leaving a good impression on the riders, organization and the public. Chico Garritano from IBA spoked very well of the first competition day specially of the wave "El gingo", because "it works very well inclusive on windy conditions".
Day 4 Lay Day (Day 1 Round 1 & 2)
Todays first round competitors where greeted with fun 3-5ft glassy conditions. The day started with a Chilean majority fiel all attempting to move on to the next rounds while making their country proud. The first heat was in the water at 8am where Diego Berrios took down his fellow Chileans for the win. Another first round stand out was Ben MacKinnon from New Zealand who was one of only a handful none Chilean heat winners for the day. Venezuela’s Giovanni Pinto and Cesar Parra both one their heats respectably and moved into round two. Besides the above it was an all Chile win ratio heading into round two with great performances by Christian Calfulem, Matias Muniz,Mauro Vivanco and Feilipe Concha (see heat draw attached).
Round two was stopped short due to mid afternoon on shores but before the stoppage, three rounds had been written into the history books. Heat 1 Round 2 saw Sergio Luis gain the highest wave score of the event so far with a total of 14.33 followed by Alex Widtma gaining the second highest in Heat 3 Round 2 with a 13.50 (both rider hail from Chile). Rusty Frisden one of only two mainland Pros to enter the event was taken out today in a waveless heat needing only a 2.87 to pass to the next round. With no time let on the clock Matias Muniz (Chile) and Raul Nogueira from Brazil had passed during the lowest scoring heat of the event.
An unfortunate situation went down prior to the contest with Hawaiian David Phillips falling ill to a infected Appendix that had to be surgically removed a day prior to the start of the event. David will pull through but had a rough ordeal that we wish him a fast recovery. David was added to the injury/illness list of Mitch Rawlins (Ruptured Kydney), Andrea Botha (Family illness) and Diego Cabrera (Hit the reef) all of which had to pull out of the event.
